A party was organised recently by several students from three of the major private schools in Limassol, for once showing that combined events could indeed be organised. However, several stories sprung out that all three schools applied for legal action or at least threatened the use of it against the club hosting the event and/or the organising students.
Now lets look at this from a fair perspective… The legal action could stand because unfortunately the organisers included
the names of the schools they attended and wished to target for the success of this party. Firstly, a big mistake although we know this was done with a hope of clarifying the image of this party as a united one, not of one
‘click’ or even a specific school’s event (as in an event solely arranged by members of one school for members of only that school) which had been occuring more and more regularly all over Limassol. Looking at the flyer, no actual school was directly refered to in their official registered name, only referred to, its kind of like that big red drinks company suing you for having an event and advertising that it was for “anyone who hates cola”. Logically, that big red co, cannot touch the event organisers. :s
Now, lets look at this from the organisers side(ie the students from all three schools involved in setting up the venue and promoting the events)… For once someone, has thought outside the box that most private schools like to keep their students in, to ‘protect them’ from external factors (sounds like a familiar story about that fairly large software and internet company was charged with anti-trust violations, dont it?). We all know that one of the schools in Limassol is amazing in this area, especially when it involves any interaction concerning her students and those of the other private- or even public-educational institutions in the area, but I was astonished to see the same exact reaction from the more human-faced schools’ administrations. One could, rightfully, argue that of course the schools did not want to risk the chance of any legal liability from any accidents or damages caused or inflicted by the party or the people attending it.
Keep in mind that if the same group who organised it, had organised this party as co-incedently all their birthdays fell in the same week, and each invited their schools’ last 2 grades, the party would have gone ahead with almost no issues.
Now to see this from another side.. all three schools’ student representatives, student bodies or even pupils individually have requested activities involving all private schools in the area, from sporting events to similar parties to actual debates. All of the above mentioned activities would have filtered any negative competitiveness out and created a new phase for private education in Limassol, much like the climate between the leading universities world-wide, esp in England where most of these fine schools aim to send their students in the upcoming months. (Please note that the schools did respond in giving the schools a platform for PUBLIC SPEAKING, ffs!)
As I have been following the progress of this party’s growth for a while now, we see that this party would have been a success had the legal guns been pointed inwards. The schools have FAILED ONCE AGAIN to persue a more international styled society of competitive yet
NOW SCHOOLS, INSTEAD OF PUNISHING THE INVOLVED, TAKE THE LESSON LEARNED… PUPILS FROM ALL THE SCHOOL WANT COMBINED ACTIVITIES AND A MORE FRUITFUL SOCIAL SCHOOL CALENDAR!!!

Edit 1 : Action Taken : Suspension…? For what exactly? Erm… Advertising an Event? Not banned in any of school rules. Using schools name? Can be morally condemned but please note the irony that if a student or group of students from any of the schools had been successful in, for example, being selected as Cyprus’ #1 DJ/sthe school would have rewarded the student/s and begged for their name to be besides his/hers.
